The strike happened around 6:20 p.m. on the tracks behind The Big Y Supermarket on West Street in Pittsfield.
Witnesses told police they saw two men walking toward the tracks shortly before the strike, the Berkshire County District Attorney's Office said. The conductor spotted the men and blew the train horn to alert them as the train couldn't stop quickly.
The train hit one of the men who was later rushed to Berkshire Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries. The DA's office did not release his name.
The second man got out of the train's path, but he ran away from the scene before police arrived, the prosecutor's office said. Authorities have not identified him.
